Second Conditional. Use if + past and would + base verb to imagine an unreal or unlikely present/future situation.
The idea
Use if + past simple and would + base verb for an imaginary present or unlikely future situation.
Structure & examples
If I lived closer, I would walk to work.
If we had a garden, we would grow herbs.
Notice the pattern
The past form in the if clause marks distance from reality, not past time. Were is often used with all subjects in formal hypothetical statements, especially If I were you. The result can also use could or might when the meaning is ability or possibility.
If I were you I would wait.
We would go if we could.
Important notes & common mistakes
Avoid would in the if clause in this pattern.
Before you practice
First choose a form from the options. Then produce it yourself using the word or structure in the instruction. Finally, build complete sentences. Check the explanation after each answer and revisit any mistakes in your review list.
