We were staying in an old guesthouse when tapping began behind the wall. My friend had just read a story about the building, so we immediately connected the sound with it. The tapping stopped when we entered the corridor and returned after we went to bed. By morning, we had built an elaborate explanation involving a former resident.
The owner listened patiently, then asked when we had heard it. A heating pipe expanded as the system warmed up, and its sound was easier to hear from our room than from the corridor. I felt foolish, but the owner did not laugh. She said visitors often notice things differently after hearing a story. The experience remained memorable, although what it taught us concerned expectation more than ghosts.
