Whittier, Alaska, is often introduced with a striking description: a town living in one building. Begich Towers does contain a large share of the community's homes, but the description should not be read as a literal statement about every resident. City planning documents also list other housing. The interesting question is what concentrated housing means for everyday life.

Neighbours may meet repeatedly in shared spaces, and maintaining common facilities becomes a collective concern. Yet people in the same building can still have very different routines. The headline captures an unusual feature quickly; a fuller account leaves room for the residents and buildings that the shortcut hides. A memorable description is useful only if readers know where it stops being exact.
