During a local cycling race, Leo noticed that a competitor had taken a shorter route. Nobody near the finish seemed to have seen it. Leo was angry, but his coach asked him to describe exactly what he had observed before making an accusation. The organisers checked the route markings and discovered that a sign had fallen.
Several riders had made the same wrong turn. The result still needed correcting, but the explanation was different from deliberate cheating. Leo apologised for his first comment online. He learned that protecting fair competition required more than identifying an unfair result: it also required finding out how that result had happened.
