The room-search event gave each visitor five minutes to speak with a possible flatmate. I expected to discuss hobbies, but one conversation quickly turned to washing-up. A woman explained that she liked clear agreements about cleaning and guests. At first this seemed less friendly than talking about films.
Later, I realised she was describing the things that would shape daily life. Another visitor loved all my favourite music but worked night shifts and needed silence when I was usually home. I did not choose a room that evening. Instead, I arranged a longer visit with the woman who asked practical questions. Getting on well mattered, but sharing a home would require more than matching tastes.
