When Mila arrived to interview the owner of an old cinema for her college magazine, she discovered that her recorder had stopped working. She had charged it the night before but had forgotten to check the memory. Every minute of space was full. Deleting old files would take time, and the owner, Mr Evans, had only half an hour before a meeting.
Mila apologised and took out a notebook. Without a screen to watch, she found herself listening more closely. Mr Evans described the cinema's busiest years, then mentioned a cleaner who had worked there for forty years. Mila had planned to ask about famous visitors, but she followed this unexpected lead instead. Mr Evans explained how the cleaner remembered regular customers and noticed when someone needed help.
Back at college, Mila realised that some of her notes were incomplete. Rather than inventing quotations, she emailed Mr Evans to check the details. Her finished article focused on the people who made the cinema feel welcoming. She still bought a new memory card, but she also started carrying a notebook to every interview.
