How to write an article – B1 Preliminary (PET) Exam

Syllabus topic 5: How to write an article – B1 Preliminary (PET) Exam

90–120 words · Article. Write an original exam-style article for a student magazine answering: 'Where do you like spending time with friends, and what makes that place special?' Use a title and engage the reader. This is independent skills practice, not an official exam paper.

Your writing task

Write 90–120 words. Write an original exam-style article for a student magazine answering: 'Where do you like spending time with friends, and what makes that place special?' Use a title and engage the reader. This is independent skills practice, not an official exam paper.

Writing focus

Address the magazine reader directly when it fits. A title and an interesting opening help, but answering the task matters more than adding decoration.

Independent practice. Format reference: Cambridge English: B1 writing checklist (about 100 words for an article).

Our favourite corner Where can you talk, play games and spend almost no money? For my friends and me, the answer is the small park behind our school. We usually meet there on Friday afternoons. Some of us play basketball, while others sit under the trees and talk about the week. There is enough space for everyone, and nobody has to buy anything to stay. What makes the park special is the relaxed atmosphere. We can arrive at different times and still find each other easily. If you need somewhere simple to meet your friends, why not explore the green spaces near your school?

This example illustrates structure and tone and may be shorter than the suggested range. Develop your own response.
