Original fictional learning scenario. People, dialogue and personal experiences are created for language practice.
At a museum workshop, we discussed machines that moved long before modern computers. The guide used the word 'automaton': a device that follows a built-in sequence of movements. We made a simple cardboard bird with a turning handle. It was not ancient, but it helped us understand how movement could come from connected parts.
One student called it a robot. The guide said the comparison was useful, as long as we remembered the differences. Our bird could not sense its surroundings or choose a new action. It repeated the same movement because of its mechanical design, not because it understood our instructions.
