Romeo and Juliet became famous names in a conservation story, but these characters were frogs. Romeo was a Sehuencas water frog living in human care. For years, researchers could not find another member of his species in the wild. Then a team searching in Bolivia found more frogs, including a female named Juliet. The discovery was announced in 2019 and brought hope for the species. News reports used the language of romance, which attracted attention. Scientists, however, had a wider task: caring for the animals and protecting their future. A memorable love-story headline helped people notice a serious conservation problem.
