Hobbies: Why do people collect?

Original fictional learning scenario. People, dialogue and personal experiences are created for language practice.
When I asked my uncle why he collected old bus tickets, I expected him to talk about money. Instead, he opened a box and told me stories. One ticket was from his first day at work. Another was from a journey to meet my aunt. He did not want every ticket ever printed. He wanted reminders of particular days. My friend collects stones because she enjoys comparing their shapes. Neither collection would interest everyone, but both mean something to their owners. I began to understand that a collection can be a personal history rather than a group of expensive objects.
