An old headline calls Ashrita Furman 'the man with the most world records'. Guinness World Records describes him as a remarkably prolific record-breaker. He has attempted many unusual challenges, rather than concentrating on one traditional sport. However, a record headline needs a date and a clear meaning. Does it count every record ever broken, or only records still held? Guinness now explains that it no longer tracks an overall leader for the most records broken. Furman's achievements remain interesting, but the headline should not be treated as a permanent ranking. Reading carefully means checking what an impressive-sounding number actually measures.
