In December 2004, ten-year-old Tilly Smith was on holiday in Thailand with her family. She noticed unusual conditions in the sea and remembered a geography lesson about tsunamis. Instead of keeping quiet, she warned her parents. Adults then helped people leave the beach before the tsunami arrived. Reports often describe her as the girl who helped save around a hundred people. The important lesson is not that one child replaced an emergency service. It is that education helped her notice danger, and adults listened and acted. Something learned in a classroom became useful in a situation far from school.
