Original fictional learning scenario. People, dialogue and personal experiences are created for language practice.
Our statistics class saw a chart with fewer recorded births on some dates. Someone joked that babies were choosing their birthdays. Our teacher asked a better question: where did the numbers come from? The chart described one place during one period, not every birth in the world. It also mixed planned births with births that started naturally. Before explaining the pattern, we needed more information about how the data had been collected. We changed our project title from 'Babies avoid these dates' to 'What might explain this chart?' The second title was less exciting, but it was more accurate.
