Original fictional learning scenario. People, dialogue and personal experiences are created for language practice.
Our class prepared a display about rainbows. The science group explained how sunlight and water droplets create the colours. Another group collected stories from books and family interviews. We noticed that a rainbow could represent hope in one story and a bridge in another.
At first, we wanted to label each meaning with a whole country. Our teacher suggested naming the particular story or speaker instead. Not everyone in a country believes the same thing. We changed our labels and added where each story came from. The display became more interesting when we stopped trying to give every place just one meaning.
