Jon used to choose the fastest possible route when visiting friends abroad. This year, he travelled by train instead of flying. The journey took a day longer and required careful planning, yet he found the travel itself unexpectedly enjoyable. He watched the landscape change and spent an afternoon in a town he would otherwise never have seen. He acknowledges that rail travel is not always affordable or practical, especially for people with limited holiday time. Nevertheless, he now compares the quality of the journey as well as the arrival time.
