Original fictional learning scenario. People, dialogue and personal experiences are created for language practice.

When my parents separated, relatives kept asking whether they would remain friends. The question seemed to offer only two acceptable stories: a perfect friendship or a permanent battle. Their actual relationship developed more slowly. At first they communicated mainly about practical arrangements. Later, they could attend important family events together, although they still preferred separate holidays.

I stopped judging their progress by whether they behaved like a couple who had never separated. Respect did not require constant closeness. My mother also reminded me that their choices were not a model every family had to follow. What mattered to me was that they kept their promises and did not ask me to carry messages between them. Their relationship was different, and different did not necessarily mean unsuccessful.
