Fishing nets are designed to catch fish, but they can also trap animals that fishers do not intend to catch. This is called bycatch. Researchers have tested attaching LED lights to certain nets so that sea turtles can detect the barrier more easily. Trials described by NOAA found encouraging reductions in turtle bycatch in particular settings.
However, one successful trial does not prove that the same design will work everywhere. Net types, local species and costs can differ. A useful solution must protect wildlife while remaining practical for the people using the equipment. The lights are therefore an example of testing and improving a tool, rather than a reason to declare the whole bycatch problem solved.
