The Ig Nobel Prizes draw attention to research that seems amusing or surprising before encouraging people to think about it more deeply. This does not mean every winning study is useless. An unusual question can reveal an interesting method, and a funny title can lead a reader towards a serious issue. In our science club, we chose a past prize description and tried to explain the research without making fun of the researchers.
That was harder than simply repeating the joke. We had to identify what was measured and what could reasonably be concluded. By the end, we were still laughing, but we were also asking better questions. Humour had opened the door rather than replaced understanding.
