Original fictional learning scenario. People, dialogue and personal experiences are created for language practice.
I found my first translation assignment through someone I knew only from a community garden. We had never discussed careers at length, but she remembered that I studied languages when a local organisation needed help. Close friends knew my ambitions in far greater detail; they simply moved within many of the same circles as I did. The acquaintance connected me with a different one. Afterwards, I briefly treated every casual conversation as a possible professional opportunity.
That made social life feel unpleasantly strategic. I eventually found a better balance: being open about my interests without treating people as instruments. The value of a loose connection was not only the chance of a job. It also included unfamiliar perspectives and a sense of belonging beyond my closest group. A relationship does not have to be intimate to matter, and it does not have to be profitable to be worth maintaining.
