Writing an article for the First exam

Syllabus topic 8: Writing an article for the First exam

140–190 words · Article. An English-language magazine asks: 'What skill would you like more people to learn, and how could they start?' Write an original exam-style article answering both questions. Use an engaging title and support your ideas. This is independent practice, not an official exam paper.

Your writing task

Write 140–190 words. An English-language magazine asks: 'What skill would you like more people to learn, and how could they start?' Write an original exam-style article answering both questions. Use an engaging title and support your ideas. This is independent practice, not an official exam paper.

Writing focus

An article should sound as if it has a reader. Use examples and a direct opening, but avoid spending so long on the introduction that you miss a task point.

  3. Give practical first steps and an effective ending.

Useful language

  • Have you ever wished you could…?
  • The best thing about learning this is…
  • You don't need to begin with…

Use these phrases if they fit your ideas. There is no single correct response.

Review your draft

This is guided self-review, not automatic grading. The word range is a guide. Editing your text clears the checklist so you can review the new version; previous lesson completion stays in your history.

Learn to fix one small thing Have you ever thrown something away because you did not know how to repair it? Learning a few simple sewing skills could change that habit, and you do not need to become an expert to begin. I would like more people to learn how to replace a button or mend a small tear. These skills can keep a favourite item in use and make us look more carefully at the things we own. There is also real satisfaction in solving a practical problem yourself. The easiest first step is to ask someone experienced to demonstrate a basic repair. Practice on an old piece of fabric before working on something important. A local workshop can also be useful because you can ask questions as you go. Start with one manageable task rather than buying an enormous kit. Once you have repaired one thing successfully, the next challenge will seem much less mysterious.

This example illustrates structure and tone and may be shorter than the suggested range. Develop your own response.
