Passive verbs with two objects

Syllabus topic 14: Passive verbs with two objects

Passive verbs with two objects. Some ditransitive verbs allow either object as the passive subject: She was given a prize; a prize was given to her.

How it works

Some ditransitive verbs allow either object as the passive subject: She was given a prize; a prize was given to her. With buy/make, for often replaces to. Not every two-object pattern transfers freely; explain requires a thing + to-person structure.

Examples in context

Notice how each form fits its sentence. Read the context before choosing a form.

  • She was offered a scholarship.
  • A letter was sent to all applicants.
  • A cake was made for the winner.
  • The rules were explained to us.
  • I was told the news.
