Original fictional learning scenario. People, dialogue and personal experiences are created for language practice.
The council's proposal promised a peaceful square with new trees and elegant paving. At the public consultation, residents welcomed the shade but questioned the seating. The drawings showed narrow benches with divisions that made it difficult for some people to sit comfortably. A parent asked where children could move without being told to stay quiet, while an older resident wanted a place to talk.
Their comments exposed an assumption in the design: calm had been treated as the absence of visible activity. The revised plan created several zones, including a quieter edge and a central area for conversation. Not every conflict disappeared, but the square no longer required everyone to use it in the same way. Urban calm, the discussion suggested, could mean having a choice about how to participate, rather than removing the people whose activity complicated a tidy picture.
