Buying second-hand clothes initially felt like a simple solution to my habit of buying too much. Each purchase seemed easier to justify because the garment already existed. After several months, however, my wardrobe was just as crowded as before. The lower prices had changed the explanation for my shopping without changing its frequency.
I began recording what I actually wore and noticed that a few adaptable pieces did most of the work. The next time I visited a charity shop, I took a list of genuine gaps instead of looking for anything that could be called a bargain. I still enjoyed finding used clothes, and repairing them became part of the pleasure. The shift was not from good shops to bad shops. It was from asking whether I could defend a purchase to asking whether it would have a useful place in my life.
