Present/Past Simple Passive

Syllabus topic 23: Present/Past Simple Passive

Present/Past Simple Passive. The passive uses be + past participle.

How it works

The passive uses be + past participle. Present simple: am/is/are made; past simple: was/were made. The object of an active sentence becomes the passive subject. Add by only when the agent matters; intransitive verbs do not normally form passives.

Examples in context

Notice how each form fits its sentence. Read the context before choosing a form.

  • These cars are made in Spain.
  • The bridge was built in 1998.
  • English is spoken here.
